Farhad Origin and Meaning

The name Farhad is a boy's name meaning "gained, earned".

The name of several rulers of Parthia and of the ill-fated admirer of the princess of Persian Armenia, Shirin. The story of Farhad's love for Shirin is one of the most famous stories in Persian literature.

Farhad, a sculptor, falls in love with Shirin, the lover of Khosrow, King of Persia. Khosrow tells Farhad that he will give up Shirin if the sculptor can carve a staircase into a mountain. Farhad builds the staircase but Khosrow has a messenger falsely inform him that Shirin has died. Farhad believes the lie and jumps to his death from the mountain.
